As a human being, if one killed a man one will feel guilty even though it was a accident or not. Also as Claudius is a Christian, he might be afraid of going to hell by having sins or killing the king. Also he might be praying because he was afraid of others to know about the fact that he killed the past king after watching the play. Therefore, for his own good, I think he was truly repenting of his sins but actually he might not improve his personality later too.

Since Claudius is Christian and believes that one would go to hell because of his or her sins, I believe that Claudius might be afraid of the punishment and the consequences that will surely come after he murdered his brother for throne. I think that he felt remorse from the beginning but it might have been this scene after he watched the play that he finally has the confidence to confess it and pray Heaven to forgive him for what he has done. But at the same time, he is a little bit angry that he felt remorse after all even though he thinks he should not be. So I think that he is feeling remorse and guilt but tries to cover it up.

I believe that he stil feels guilty because no matter how many times he confesses his sins to be forgiven by God, that still does not change the reality that he is a murderer and Hamlet is suffering because of him. If he feels truely guilty and therefore want to be forgiven by God, he shouldn't have commited such crime. What seems like to me is that Claudius is just scared of consequences for his deed.

king claudius is a human being too. when we do something we get scared. if i were him, i will be scared so much. that could be a reason why king claudius did not do anything for his sin but praying.

Claudius does not seem to be a cold-blooded king, and I think he actually feels guilty about his past deeds. If he was not feeling guilty, he would not have reacted so much to Hamlet's play. However, I agree that Claudius does not truly repent his sins because he is not willing to let of benefits he got from killing his brother. He is afraid that someone may discover his crime that he will lose everything. He also tries to commit another murder (Hamlet), which shows that he did not really regret killing a person before. He was praying sorrowfully only out of religious (Christian) feeling.

I agree too! I think Claudius is sorry for what he did and wants forgiveness from God but I don't hink he truly repented. I think if he could turn back time, he would still kill his brother so that he could be king. Claudius was probably just repenting sonhe himself could get peace within himself so that he doesn't feel so horrible anymore. Truly repenting would have led to a different action rather than trying to kill Hamlet.

Well definitely not true. He meant that as true forgiveness. He prey to the god for to get rid of the sin that he wants to be wiped away. If he preys than it will be over and he doesn't have to worry about it. That is way Hamlet waited and try to kill him when he is committed sin.

Well, we never know he was actually repenting or not. But I agree that he might not have truely repenting because if he did so, he should have given Hamlet a honest apologies, confessing every truth and what he have done. I think just by praying to God saying that He feels sorry for his action does not count as true repenting.

Well said, Julie. I definitely agree with you. I personally think that Claudius wasn't repenting at all. If he had done that, he would have left all the things he gained for killing King Hamlet and most importantly, he would have left Hamlet alone. But look what happened, even after confessing to God and asked for his forgiveness, he planned out to eliminate Hamlet, which is committing a sin.

I completley agree that Claudius was not repenting. He was only asking for forgiveness because he now acknowledged how bad his crimes were. I am sure that Claudius knew that killing his brother and marrying his brother's wife can be considered as worst crime. Since he believed in religion, i can predict that he is afraid about his after life since he can't go to heaven with this much sin. If he truly regrets what he had done, he should have announced it in public and get hanged.
