There has beem many discussion board topics about suicide. I was answering to Stormy's post about why suicide is such a big sin in Christian belief when I began to wonder if committing suicide while you are insane is a sin.
What do you guys think? Is suicide still a horrible sin against God if she was mebtally insane?
Personally, I think it is still a sin if you commit suicide when you're insane. I think taking your own life is a big deal and you have to at least have some thought before committing suicide.

I think it is still a sin to commit suicide when one is insane but I think the belief that committing suicide is not considered as horrible sin like in the past few centuries (except for some places). For example, in Korea, if one thinks that committing suicide is a horrible sin, then one must be very careful about suicide but in Korea the rate of committing suicide is very high especially to high school students. Therefore, I think committing suicide is still a sin but not that horrible sin like in the past few centuries.

I think it's more complicated when you think about the situation with someone being insane. If someone, like Ophelia, is gone mad and out of control of his or herself, I can't easily say whether it's still a BIG sin or not. I think commiting suicide is still a sin in Christian belief, but I think it should be considered somewhat differently if that person is mentally insane.

It depends how insane they are. If they are so insane that they don't know what they are doing, I don't think you can say that is a sin. But, I guess if they can think and while committing suicide know that they are taking their own life away, it'd be a sin.

Yes, suicide is still a sin against God even if you are mentally insane. It means you don't love yourself, you don't care about the others around you, and most importantly you don't respect God. Think about psychopaths murdering people. They weren't in the right state of mind when they killed another person but they still did take someone's life, which is a great sin.

I don't think suicide is against God. I mean i personally don't believe in religion so that is why suicide is not something that is against God. You make the choice and nobody can't stop from what you have chosen.

I do not think whether suicide is something against god or not isn't so important. If you kill yourself you can be free from your problems, but people around you suffer because of you. Your family will not know what to do with your death. Your parents will fall into misery and they might kill themselves too. Just think about people who have to clear your dead body after you are dead. I do feel sorry for people killing themselves but it is definitely a sin

It depends. In christianity, suicide is said to be a great sin. But in other religions, it might not be. In today's society, many people commit suicide. Some might not even know that it is horrible sin. They just do it because they want to be free from their pain. I think it depends on what you believe.

I don't think its a sin against God if someone commits suicide when they are totally insane. They are just trying to find a way to get out of that situation and they find suicide the best way. Although it is an extreme choice to choose, they are already up to a certain level where they cannot decide if its right or wrong.

Yap, committing suicide is a major sin. God has gifted you this life and you are supposed to make good out of it. He is the Lord and going against his words is a sin. Even if you are sane or insane, taking your own life isn't a suitable option.

I think committing suicide will still be considered a sin even though a person is mentally crazy. When committing suicde, you are choosing to give up your life which God created. Therefore, I think it is still a sin.

I'm and atheist so the idea of sinning against god was not that strong for me (i am just saying) and well to me the idea of suicide was different for me as well. I guess suicide is just another remedy to escape from agony and sufferings so in my book, suicide is not a sin.

I think it would still be considered a sin. But if she really didn't have any control over her thoughts and actions, it seems to be really unfair for her to go to hell for that.

It depends on the situation. If you're so insane as to be unaware of your acts, then to say that you've committed a sin would be inaccurate since it wasn't completely intentional nor with all your will. Yet, if you are still aware of your decisions to a certain extent, then I guess you can justify it as a sin. It's a situation thing I believe.

but i also think that it have to depend on the situation whether its a sin or not because there are people in the world who are completely insane to the point of not being able to recover from it. because i truly believe that insane people have chance of recovering from it. but if they are to a certain level of insanity than suicide would be the option or the best way for an individual. and also in hospital i also think that doctors would suggest suicide rather than trying to keep the patient alive.
