After reading "The Epic of Gilgamesh" How do you think Gilgamesh would continue to rule his city after he returns from the journey? Do you think he would have become a better king? If so, how and why?

I think he would've gotten worse at not taking care of his people. When he realizes that he only has so much time left, he's going to want to spend it all on himself. He's not going to be wasting time trying to make other people's lives better. And plus, he wasn't that much of a great king before so why would he change now? It's not like the lesson he learned was "be nice to other people". He learned that he should make the most out of the time he has on earth and enjoy his life while he can. Just like the gods told him to, he's going to go back to his palace, party all day and night, and buy himself good clothes and food.

After Gilgamesh returned from his journey, I think he would have gotten better at ruling his people. Since Gilgmesh knows he won't live forever, he will make sure he does some good deeds before he dies. He will provide food and medicine to the needy, not abusing the people of his city like before. Plus, if he becomes a magnificent ruler who loves his citizens, he will be remembered for generations to come. Therefore, material things such as fame, power, and wealth are meaningless because Gilgamesh will die eventually.

The story does not tell us how bad king Gilgamesh was, but I think he would have become better king. At the end of the story, the readers see that Gilgamesh accepted his human qualities and became more mature than before. He learns that life should be enjoyed and starts to care about his citizens so that they can enjoy life as well (he says he will give the plant of youth to the elders first). He also experiences and overcomes human feelings, like anger and sorrow-I think hardships can change a person. In addition, there would be no point or lesson in the story of Gilgamesh if he still did not change his attitude...

I think Gilgamesh would have become a better king after going through all that tough experiences. I believe that people's personalities and characteristics can actually be changed after they undergo many different experiences. After Gilgamesh went through those experiences and realized that he would not be living forever, he might have become a different person. Who knows, I think he would have spent the rest of his lives making his city better and ruling for his people.

I definitely think that after all that Gilgamesh went through, he would be a better king. I mean, his best friend died from all the wrong things that they did together and Gilgamesh himself had to go through a lot to try and avoid death. Since he knows now that he can't be immortal, I'm sure he would live a better life and not do anything to be punish his life as long as possible.

He would have become better king as he experienced lots of hard things and knew he can¡¯t be immortal. As he can¡¯t be immortal, he would do much better job as a king and about caring other people too to avoid punishments from gods. So, as he saw his friend, Enkidu, getting punished because he is a human, Gilgamesh will live a better life to spend better time in earth. Therefore, to avoid any troubles, he would have become a better king.

I also think that he would've become a better king after the long journey. And I totally agree with Joanne that in the end, he accepted his humanness and knew that he would never gain immortality. So as he experienced his weakness as a human, I think he might have become a better king and started to respect his subjects.

I think he would have become a better king. He learned of the greatest lessons and that must have inspired him. He realized the true pleasure he can get from his life and this must have changed his perspective on his people. After Gilgamesh realized the real point of life, he would have started to take care of his people and tried to make his country better. Gilgamesh also learned that his name can stay immortal by being a good ruler, which gives him another motivation to work harder as a king.

Yes, I think Gilgamesh would rule his country like a true king. By saying "true king" i mean to say that he would have than treated his people kindly and would have made plans and focus on the development of his country rather than himself and his powers. The main reason for this change was because of the whole moral based journey. He had learn the true power within himself and the importance of time.

I think Gilgamesh would rule his country better than he did before the journey. The journey taught him a lesson and he learned that he isn't as great as he thought himself to be. I think throughout the journey from when he learned that he couldn't revive his friend back to life with his tears and til the end when he couldn't achieve eternal life, he learned that he wasn't so powerful as he thought himself to be before. This will make him not arrogant and to treat others properly.

I guess he had become a better king then he was before. Reason is because after losing his best friend he was just thinking about himself that he wanted tp life forever instead of thinking what he did wrong and should think more about his dead friend enkidu. But after he traveled for immortality and finally learned that living forever isnt the right choice he would change hisa mind and would rule better than before. Basically he had learned something trough the journey and recognized that he wasnt a good man so i believe he had showed that he was different than before.

I think he definitely rule his kingdom well because he realize that he made a wrong decision for being selfish. Also, living forever will not allow his generation to past down and for this point, I think he changes his mind and try to be a wise king. This is just my opinion but he could have become more evil person and ruled his kingdom a lot worse than before. It depends ;D

I agree that he ruled ruled his country well and more wisely since he accepts his mortality like his people therefore he would have spent more time in developing his kingdom for his people. However, just because Gilgamesh admitted his mortality, it wouldn't have changed his personality completly. The situation could be that since he knows he isn't immortal, he might have spent his time for himself for his remaining life which could have made him more selfish and greedy king
