I also think this quote is very depressing and miserable. The solid flesh is dirty and wants this dirty think to melt or wash it away. The dirty things represents all of the bad things happened to Hamlet that his mother betrayed him for remarrying after his father’s death. He wants basically to suicide and removes the bad things around him. So the cause of this statement is because of his mother’s betrayal.

This is a very deep quote because it really reveals the character's feelings and attitude about his current situation. If this quote were to be missing from the book then we wouldn't be fully aware about Hamlet's feelings as when we read that quote in his monologue or soliloquy. So, I think this was a great selection to use as a discussion topic. Also, the fact that he says solid flesh melt, must show that he'd really rather go through the pain of just slowly dying than live in this situation, which is really profound on so many levels beyond our understanding; so profound that it could be considered unfathomable.

I think he says that because he does not want to live the way he is living right now. After his father's death, Hamlet probably had no one but his mother to rely on. However his mother betrays him by marrying his uncle. This shocked Hamlet significantly. That is the reason why Hamlet would want his flesh to melt and turn into dew, which is a figurative speech saying he wants to die.

Like you said Alam, I think Hamlet said that because he was really depressed. The beginning of the play lists out the tragedies that fell upon Hamlet, and how he is suffering because of these problems. "O, that this too too solid flesh would melt, thaw and resolve itself into a dew" shows the state that Hamlet is in: he wants to take his life away to get away from the pain that he is in.

I guess i agree with Alam he feels really disrespectful for what his mother has done. She had remarried hamlets uncle in not even 2month. It happened to quick and it is hard for hamlet to understand and plus he is too young that his mother made this decision.

Its not only about his mother's marriage to his uncle that he wants to give up his life for, its also the whole internal struggle that he is going through. Seeing a ghost in the shape of his father, the revenge for his father's murder which makes his uncle's reputation in his point of view even worse than it already was. I think he is deeply gotten under confusion and the concept of uncertainty that the only way to get out of that state, is to melt into flesh.

He is being suicidal heree... Seeing his mom getting married to his uncle would be extremely painful for anyone. Hamlet has no one to talk to, and he feels like everybody else has moved on with the death of his father. He is saying that rather than facing the reality, it would be better if he was dead and can escape from his situations.

Hamlet is very depressed because of all the bad things happening in his life. He wants to commit suicide. But the thing is, he can't commit suicide because he is Christian, and in Christianity, suicide is not allowed. I feel that many teenagers come to suicide as the resolution to problems because it is the easy escape from the pain. But, I don't think it is right to take this route so solve these problems through killing oneself.

We talked about this quote a lot in our class! I think that Hamlet is in a really bad position with all the family problems that he has been having throughout the whole play. He is really disappointed with the way that his mother married his uncle and how his father has just passed away. He didn't want to deal with the sin of his mother and uncle.

I think he is just hating the situation and he just want to get out of it. The fact that his father died and mother getting married to his brother in law would be pretty shocking for any teenagers. If I were Hamlet, I would go crazy and just live by myself If I can.

I guess he hates this situation and really wants to get away from it. I mean i can't even imagen when his uncle became his father except that i don't agree him as father but i mean yes and his mother marrying in that short time period makes him even more crazy.

The quote expresses Hamlet's feelings towards the obstacles in his life which seems miserable. He is at the end of his life, whether to commit suicide.

Hamlet is grief-stricken and heartbroken when he found his mother marrying his Uncle, murderer of his father. He is too sick and tired of living this awful life that he wishes not to live any longer and that is the problem he has to deal with. He can't commit suicide so that all his pain would wash away.
