William Shakespeare was a poet and playwright. This means he read a lot and I mean A LOT of books. So of course he read about Greek mythology and decided to add a little bit of it to Hamlet. But Shakespeare didn't use Greek mythology only in Hamlet, he also used it in his other works such as Julius Caesar.

I agree with may above, I don't think Hamlet intentionally made connections but he naturally made it as he wrote it because he knows a lot about it. Also Greek myths were very popular. So he naturally made connections.

Greek mythology was considered very Significant back in ShakeSpeare days and obviously the more you are exposed something, the more you know. I don't think Sharespeare deliberately made connections with Greek cultures because Greek culture was so famous and natural to people at that time period.

This is how writers get their inspiration. For Shakespeare, its probably the Greek culture that he admired the most. It's not Hamlet that he based his works upon Greek Myth, other examples include Romeo and Juliet - Troy, Julius Ceaser, Taming of the Shrew etc. And comparing to nowadays author, look what Harry Potter did, it introduced other Non fictions such as Twilight, The Hunger games etc.

I think that his many connections to Greek culture and Roman culture were just a result of it being popular at that time. I think these references are similar to the pop culture of today.

Greek culture was probably very popular at that time, and there was probably no other internationally famous references as Greek myth. So it's no wonder that he used those references in his book. Also, because it's so convenient, as many Greek gods, fables, and the tales share human-like qualities and share a common theme, I think that's why he also used them. It's so famous that it's still being used today.

Shakespeare mainly connected his literature pieces to Greek culture specifically because Greek culture was widely spread out and it had universal theme that anyone could understand. However, he also made a lot of connections to other cultures as well. I think this is why Shakespeare stood out from any other English playwriters during that time period, and made his reputation last longer than others.

Maybe he really enjoy and respected Greek and other mythology and because of is respect towards other religious belief, he wanted to include in his work so that his meaning of word can be expressed through other mythology.

I also think that Shakespeare connected Greek culture not only Hamlet but also a lot of his other works. There was many of the time where the characters in the stories were described or specified as a character on the greek myth
