I definitely agree with you that he was afraid of death. He is just an teenage boys. Teenagers complain about every single things happens to them and hate the world. However, it is a whole different story if someone ask you to choose between that miserable life and death. And also, becuase he had to take a revenge on Claudius for his father. I think he thought that until his revenge in complete, he shouldnt be dying.
