I met a traveller from an antique land Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed. And on the pedestal these words appear: `My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings: Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!' Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare, The lone and level sands stretch far away".
So this is the poem that I had to present for our final presentation. I really enjoyed this poem, and I loved the way Shelley used different techniques to show the themes that are in the poem.
Ms.Boyd said that there was an irony in this poem that's really important, and she said that `My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings: Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!' this part had something to do with it.
What is the irony in this poem?

When I saw the word Ozymandias, the image of the Watchmen character clicked into my mind. He is both a hero and a villain. But then in this poem, he is referred to being the king of the kings. Someone who is really proud and boastful of what he has accomplished and it's just like the character from Watchmen. AND I'm minding you, you do not want to mess with him.

I think its because of the description of Ozymandias that the traveler gives before he talks about the writing on the pedestal. The description of him says that he looks like hes really cold and hes really just a nasty person(attitude wise). Yet, it says to look upon him and learn from him. I think thats pretty ironic how his pedistal would say that even if the statue itself portrayed him as a somewhat of a bad character.
