Today in our class, Jinwoo talked about his story "Utopia." And one of the interesting rules the society held was that no one could own private property at all. As soon as I heard that, I felt like the society would become a failure.
What do you think about private properties? Do you think they are evil, or do you think they promote growth within the society?
I personally think people should be able to own properties in order for their society to improve. In economics, people all have the profit motive which states that everything being produced and provided are there because people want to earn more, and own more profits. So I personally believe that eliminating private possessions would be a threat to the society.

I agree with you stormy. Having private property motivates people to work hard in order to maintain their goods, and they have incentives to improve and grow (because they can earn more private property if they work harder). Of course there are problems with private possession such as inequality, but it would be far worse if people weren't allowed to have private property. History shows that private property is one of the determining factors that decide whether nations survive or fall.

I also think that private properties promote the growth of well-being of society and individuals. Ownership of properties gives incentive to individuals to work hard, earn money and buy more goods to accumulate his or her wealth. Because these individuals have the reason to work hard and get things they want, it certainly benefits the society as a whole. Thus, it is necessary that laws should be enforced that protect private property. If nobody could own property, like in "Utopia," it is hard for people to be motivated and work hard.

I don't think that private property is a bad thing. There is a reason why capitalism is so prevalent and successful in the world today, because acquirement and upkeep of property is given because people take care of their stuff. For public property on the other hand, people don't actually own it, and will try to get out of working towards the upkeep of it.

i really do not think society will be able to survive if individuals cannot own private property. This i s why communism failed. I mean would you want to work for something if you cannot get anything out of it? Having private property motivates people to work hard and each individuals hard work shapes society to be prosperous.

I think private possessions are essential. What someone has usually defines them as a person. Also, it would be impossible to not have private possessions since people are pretty greedy.

I think private property is a really important thing. It doesn't make sense for there to be no private property. I would hate to have nothing on my own and have all of the same thing as everyone else around me. I feel like there's always going to be private property though because even in communism, where everyone supposed to be equal, there's always some people who have their own stuff.

I think we should be able to own private properties, and it does promote growth in society. If noone can own anything like Utopia, then what's the point of us working and making/earning money? So I think it's really important to have our own properties.

I think it promotes growth in society. WIthout being able to posses something, there wouldn't be any motivation to study/work. As students, we study right now to get into college and find a job that pays us high wages. When we make money, we save it to buy what we want latter in the future. This is how we learn the value of money and learn to work in order to get what we want. Society will develop if people save and consume.

Owning a private property is not wrong. As I learned in Economics and what Elijah mentioned, no one takes care about the public property. It's free and public use it a lot more often. On the other hand, people will take good care of their own property and will make sure nothing bad happens to it. So to answer the question, I would say that it's not an evil thing to own private properties and yes it does promote growth in society because people will compete with each other.

I think that privacy is key to a good relationship. Within a relationship with any other person, you have to learn to respect their own privacy. It is to an extent though. I feel like having too much privacy is also really bad as well because then, it creates a barrier between you and the other person.

I don't think anything is inherently evil. It's when it's used improperly. Private property + greed = exploitation of people. If there is a way to get rid of that greed then that would be great. That's why I believe in democratic socialism instead of communism. Communism, from what I understand, gives too much power to the government. Democratic socialism is run by the people.
