We're watching Gandhi in World History class these days and it highlights his use of non-violence and civil disobedience to reach independence. He would not fight back or hurt anybody but he would simply not comply with unjust laws. That's how he earned people's respect. MLK used a similar tactic during the civil rights era in the United States.
What do you guys think of the non-violence approach to escaping oppression? I personally think it works in some situations and other situations it doesn't. When the oppressor has a conscience, then it would work. But sometimes you can be the most respectable person and nothing will change because people simply do not care.

I think it does work. the non-violence protest would change the oppressor's mind and also the general public's mind because everyone would agree to the purpose of having no violence and eventually having peace. it would take long time to change the society but eventually there will be a change.
