People have always been fascinated by heroes. Throughout history, many people interpreted the concept hero differently in various forms of media or literature. To me, hero is someone who sacrifices himself or herself to help others and thus contribute to society. My definition of hero can be compared with CBS show Assignment America, Bionicle's song, and the Epic of Gilgamesh.
CBS show Assignment America presents the definition of hero very differently from mine. It states that anyone, like athletes and soldiers, is hero these days. However, I think anyone cannot be considered as a hero-athletes or soldiers are not strictly helping people. They are just doing their jobs. Assignment America's definition of hero is too general to me.
Bionicle's song's definition of hero is similar to mine. The song explains that anyone who overcomes fear and undoes the wrong is a hero. I agree as well-a person who acts for others despite fear and difficulty is truly heroic. Hence, Bionicle's song about hero has most similar opinion with me.
Epic of Gilgamesh portrays 'hero' according to Mesopotamian culture, which I do not agree. The epic is about superhuman Gilgamesh who can do many extraordinary feats and goes on a journey in search of immortality. He later learns that immortality does not bring happiness, changes his personality, and returns to his kingdom to rule generously. I do not understand how changing his personality or superhuman strength makes Gilgamesh heroic-he is supposed to rule his kingdom well, and being strong does not equal being heroic.
Therefore, Bionicle's song presents the definition of hero most similar to my own definition. CBS show and the Epic of Gilgamesh are too general or cliched about the definition of hero. Hero is actually someone who overcomes his or her situation and bravely helps other for well-being of society. Our society can truly become better by heroes.
