For my English project, I did a research on what Ancient Greeks considered "beauty" and I learned that they valued pale skin and white skin was considered the most beautiful thing in the world. Then I found this picture of women who were considered "the most beautiful" 100 years ago and the ladies seem a little different from what we expect. (Not sure if you have seen this picture ) Anyways, my point is that depending on the culture, the standard of beauty is different. Why do you think it happened? and what do you think the standard of beauty is?

Standard of beauty is all different because different groups of people value and believe different things. I've heard that in the olden days being fat was considered beautiful because it represented wealth. It's different from today where we think that being skinny is beautiful. I think standard of beauty is ones opinion about an ideal appearance.

I think standard of beauty is very different because all different groups of people have different ideas. One might say that skinny women are beautiful, but one might say fat women are beautiful. However, i think if person is beautiful, many people will agree she is beautiful. I think it is very broad and something hard to make generalization of.

Where is you link for women 100 years ago? Anyways... I do not have any standard of beauty. When i see someone and if she is beautiful I go "Thats HOT". I have to admit that people in these days prefer skinny women and call skinny women as beautiful. I dont know... it is just something very personal and hard to say.

I think that the standard of beauty is different for every culture because some people may not actually be able to clearly see the differences in people's faces in certain cultures. For instance, if a white man was to look at korean women, they may not realize which face of a woman is actually considered pretty. I think that the standard of beauty is just the level of "beautifulness" that every person thinks of when looking at women.

People have different perspectives and ideas about what beauty is. Since we all have different cultures, we might not see the differences or might see a big difference between a true beauty or not. Such a hard to explain

Standard beauty depends on that persons perspective. If that person thinks being tall is the real beauty then that is the standard of beauty. However like Sarah said in the old days people considered being fat represents wealth because in that time period it was hard to get food and being fat represents that that person has money to buy food so it was the standard of beauty that time.

I think it's different not only for each culture, but also for each person. The thing that I think is beautiful may not be pretty to you, and vice versa. And this is why there are all different people walking on the street, with all different styles. But since we are also living in a larger group, having common cultural aspects/perspectives, the very basic standard of beauty would be similar within the same culture like Yerin's example.

I think people think whatever is hard to achieve or attain is more valuable and therefore deserves more respect. Back in the days, it was harder for people to look plump, fat, or well-fed so they believed that fat women were beautiful. But nowadays, it's harder for people to be skinny and fit, so those people are considered beautiful. I also think the media plays a big role in determining a society's standard of beauty. I don't know about the ancient times since they didn't have TVs or advertisements but in today's society, what comes out in the TVs is what's best. We're often convinced that the images shown on the TV is the "ideal" thing to chase after.

Cultures derive the standard of beauty from a lot of things. Long time ago, in China, health was the sign of beauty, and fat women were considered beautiful. In British culture, nobles thought it was unseemly to expose yourself to nature, so bathing was a taboo. Also, having a really really small waist was a mark of beauty. It all depends on a culture's religious beliefs, the media, and their own set of beliefs. My standard of beauty is similar to what modern society deems beautiful, but I think that women who are charming are the most beautiful.

I think that beauty sometimes is seen as fashion. As new generations come new trends come in. We have not only seen those types of changes in that way but also we have seen it terms of culture and customs in general. Many of the things that happened it existed before are now seen as something different and hard to accept and maybe even adapt.

i think the standard of beauty is still a mystery because nobody can be perfect and no one can be the most beautiful woman in the world. even if she is so perfect or pretty or whatever. But it also depends on individual thinking and opinion towards beauty and perfection. so for me i can't really judge or comment a woman or girl as a pretty or perfect.

I think the standards of beauty are different for everyone. Depending on what a person wants and values, the standards are different. Also, What a society wants is reflected as well. With all these factors included, the standard of beauty is created. I think the standard of beauty is external attractiveness and internal beauty such as a deep personality. More and more these days, inner beauty is more valued.

As time passed, the point of looking that people appreciate can be changed. In Ancient Chinese dynasties, fat women were considered as beautiful and blessed. Skinny women were seemed as unlucky. It's due to the reason that food was rare in the past so only the people who lived well can have enough foods. Then the fat women were naturally considered as rare beauty. Now, everyone is able to buy a lot of foods. To become skinny is the point the modern people appreciate.
