Whenever I read about people who want to become immortal, I don't get it. I feel like it's going to be so boring to keep on living forever. Like for Edward in Twilight. Meeting Bella was probably the most fun he ever had in a thousand years, and that's pretty sad. Of course, Edward didn't want to live forever, but Gilgamesh did.
So my question is, have you guys ever wanted to live forever? Were you ever afraid of the afterlife that you wanted to stay here? And do you think there are other reasons Gilgamesh might have wanted to become immortal?

I had sort of wanted to live forever when I was little. But I think immortality is just human's fantasy that we won't never get, and thus we're dreaming. I now think that it would be no means of living because it would never end. Like you said, I don't want to live forever like Edward in Twilight. I do afraid of death, but I think it's what we should accept as a human. I think dreaming immortality is too stupid as a human.

I also agree with the argument that living forever would be too boring and meaningless. If humans were given immortality then I think they would become too relaxed since they don't have any time limit in their life and consequently there're would be no development and no ambition. As for Gilgamesh, he wanted to become immorital because he had seen how Gods killed his friend and so he was ambitious to become a full God with the same level of power and authority.

The main reason for Gilgamesh was him being afraid of death. After seeing his friend die, he realized that death is inevitable.
You guys said that living forever would be boring and somewhat meaningless but I have a different opinion. I would actually want to live forever even though it seems stupid. I guess its because I'm still young and I'm afraid of death. When I get to the point to die, or if I know that I would die soon, I would want to live longer. I also want to see how this world would develop and change. The advance in technology would probably bring something we cannot imagine or see right now. I want to see what happens, like if there would be any war again, go to other planets and meet aliens or see the end of this world. If I'm the only person to live forever, I would write a book evey thousand year on how the world changed. I know I might look kind of childish but this is what I think!

Yes, there were a couple of times that I thought about living forever. I wanted to live forever because I was afraid I would go to hell after I died. So I think Gilgamesh feared death too because he felt like he wasn't ready. He had many things he wanted to do but when he realized he doesn't have much time, he started freaking out. Gilgamesh didn't want to just disappear like his friend, Enkidu; he desired to be immortal like the gods.

No, I don't want to live forever. I feel like if I live forever it wouldn't be the same. I think people enjoy life because we all know that it is going to come to an end. So they try to get the best out of it before it ends. However if they know it is never going to end then there is no point in them trying to get the best out of it. People would no longer try since they have forever and they can wait forever. More people would wait and there would be no progress. So even though it might be a sad thing to die, I think it is a motivation for us to proceed.

No, that would be awful. I'd be super old. And even if I had eternal youth, I think there's a point where you would just want it to end. I guess because the afterlife is so much better in my religion. In my point of view, this world is a journey and your destination is the afterlife. And I agree with Cathy said. What fun is it to know that you have no real future? Gilgamesh feared death because of his experience with his friend. If he thought the afterlife was nicer, I doubt would've went through all that. People who are afraid of death often feel like they haven't accomplished anything or that the afterlife is somehow awful. I don't think there's really a reason to fear death.

I think Edward is happy now because Bella became Vampire also. Anyway, I want to live forever if people i love can live forever as well. And there are people who do not believe in the after life too . I would love to live forever if i have money and time to have some fun. I want to experience many different forms of life such as lower class, middle class and social ruling class. I kinda want to be super rich and know how it feels like.

I have never wanted to live forever-I believe that the life is meaningless and do not want it to continue forever. I will be happy to live long enough and experience many things. However, eternal life is a problem-after certain age, whether I will look old or young, I would have to move around a lot and be unable to be close to other people. I am not really afraid of death or afterlife-I do not have any regret or obsession about living longer. I guess my thought is influenced by my religion. Things would have been different for Gilgamesh. He is not a commoner but a powerful king. His life would have been really happy, being able to satisfy his wants all the time. He would not have wanted this to end that he was afraid of dying. Enkidu's description of dusty afterlife and dead kings as servants also would not have sounded like paradise.

when i was younger i did thought of living forever, thinking that it would be cool to see things come and go, but now i thinkg living forever is not a really good thing because you would suffer forever. but if i could live forever in a young age like right now, i would like to live an eternal life. Gilgamesh was kind of selfish and scared of death that is why he wanted an eternal life

To me if i dont really care but I want to do the things that i would love to do before i dead or go to the after life. If i could live forever that would be great but people get old and will age. To me i don't really care what happen to me in the afterlife because this is my life and i will live to its maximum before i go to the after.
maybe Gilgamesh saw his best friend died and wanted immortality thinking that someday he will be like his friend.

I believe death is a natural cause and that one shouldn't be afraid of it. Personally, I've never wanted to be immortal because I know that it'll never happen, realistically speaking. However, what people should do is just live happily while alive and make the best out of it as possible. Gilgamesh wanted to be immortal because he was afraid he was going to be like his friend.

Many times, I wanted to live forever because I was afraid of death. Whether it is painful or not, I was just afraid of it. Also, when you think about it, it is very sad to leave all the people who love you behind and die. However, I also think that it would be boring just like you said. Also, I would be really lonely since all my friends are going to die at some point while I would just stay the same and live forever. I was not afraid of the afterlife because I do not really belive in it. I think Gilgamesh wanted to become immortal because he was right there with Enkidu when Enkidu was dying painfully from the sickness that gods gave. So, I guess Gilgamesh was afraid that he might die in the same painful way.

Honestly, I have wanted to live forever. I thought that way because I was scared of how I was going to die and how it would feel. I wasn't afraid of the afterlife or anything just at that moment when I died, I thought that it would be scary and painful. But now, I don't want to live forever. I think I would run out of things to do and it would just be a really dull life to keep living. I would rather enjoy and live my life with a purpose and then peacefully die.

well i wanted to live forever but i realized theres no point of living if you could live forever. You'll not appreciate your time and you'll get bored of this life. When youre young forever, then you start to procrastinate and tend to think of things like they dont really matter to your life. I think death is the best part of your life. Its like the next event of our lives. It is the consequence of your life on earth when you were alive. well thats based on my religion hehe
